The Main Window is for moving your units and monitoring the game.
You can use the scrollbars at the right and lower border of the window to change the visible area of the map. A thick white frame marks the unit that is currently selected; on the status bar you can see some additional information about that unit (its unit type, its current and its maximum hit points, its remaining movement points, for aircraft the remaining range and for ferries some information about their load).
Left Mouse Button
A click on the left mouse buttons will select the unit under the mouse cursor. The unit will get a thick white frame and the information about that unit will be displayed on the status bar. If there is more than one unit inside a city, you may have to move some units first before you can move the others.Dragging with the mouse
If you keep the left mouse button pressed and move the mouse cursor to another tile, the selected unit will attempt to move towards that tile as soon as the mouse button is released. Please note that land units may not enter water, ships may not enter land, and only land units may try to attack neutral or enemy cities.Right Mouse Button
If you release the mouse button over a tile that is more than one tile away from the selected unit, it will attempt to move as far as possible towards that tile, if its movement points and the terrain permit. If there is no straight or diagonal line from the unit to the target tile, it will first attempt to move diagonally until there is a straight line towards the mouse cursor.
Clicking the right mouse button over a city will open or initialise the City Window for this city. The "Next" Button (Arrow) / TAB Key / NumPad 5Clicking the right mouse button over one of your own units will display its type and hit points. If the unit is a full ferry it will also show all the units which are loaded onto that ferry. In this case, you can also select the next unit you want to unload with a double-click.
If a ferry or carrier is selected, right-clicking an adjacent tile will unload a unit from the ferry/carrier.
Note: If you want to know about a unit that is located inside one of your own cities, you can select the unit with a left mouse click and then click "Unit" button above the map window.
You can use this button to select the next unit with remaining movement points. If this button is greyed, all your units have moved. You can then finish your turn. The STOP Button / Space key
You can use this button if you want a unit to stay in its place for the current turn. You can also use this button to repair a unit inside one of your cities. The button "Move": "Mines" / "M" Key
You can use this button if the selected unit is a mineboat and if you want to put mines onto the tile your unit is on. Please note that passing this tile will be dangerous for your own ships, too!The button "Move": "Road" / "R" Key
You can put mines on up to three tiles per turn with this method: On the tile where your boat starts as well as on the two tiles where it is located after spending its two movement points.Mines will be displayed as small white squares on your map (as in the example above).
Armies can be used to build roads on grassland (not forests). The army has to spend one movement point for building the road, i. e. it cannot move in that turn. When the road is finished, land units can travel along those roads without spending movement points, i. e. as far as you like until they leave the road. The button "Move": "Done"Roads will appear on your map as small grey lines (as in the example above).
Press this button if you have moved all your units in order to finish your turn, so that the next player can do his turn. The "Unit" button / "I" Key
This button displays information about the selected unit in the same way as a right mouse click on the unit does (see above). The button "Move": "Fortify" / "F" Key
If you fortify the selected unit by pressing this button, it will remain in its place and it will be removed from the list of active units (i. e. it won't be selected by pressing the "Next" button). Whenever the unit is attacked, or when you click on it with the mouse, it will be automatically reactivated.NumPad
While NumLock is switched on, you can also move the selected unit with the NumPad keys. Together with the NumPad-5, which will select the next available unit, this is a convenient way to play Emperor with the keyboard.Loading and Unloading Ferries and Carriers
If you want to load a land unit onto a ferry, you have to move the ferry on a tile next to the coast tile where the land unit is located. Select the land unit with a mouse click and drag it onto the ferry.BackNote: You can only load units onto a ferry if they have a remaining movement point. The ferry may use its movement points before or after unloading, just as you think is best.
In order to load a carrier, simply move aircraft, helicopters or bombers on the tile with the carrier.
In order to unload units from a ferry, select the ferry with a mouse click and drag it onto a land tile (just as if you wanted to move the ferry onto that tile). The ferry will remain in its place, and a unit from the ferry will be unloaded onto the land tile. The unloaded unit cannot move any further in the same turn. You can only unload units onto free land tiles, i. e. not into cities and not onto tiles that are occupied by enemy units.
Another way to unload units from a ferry or carrier is to select the ferry/carrier (left mouse click) and then right-click on an adjacent tile. This will unload a unit onto this tile. Note that land units can only be unloaded onto land tiles, and that unloading into cities or onto tiles with other units is not possible.
In order to select which unit to unload from a ferry or carrier, use the information window (right mouse click, or the "Unit" button) and double-click the unit you want.
